Thur 24 Aug – Crossing Mountains
We set out from Buffalo, still heading west, and the land is reasonably flat but there are hills in the distance That’s not Yellowstone yet, those are the Big Horn mountains, seen here from a town called Tongue River… Soon we were climbing those mountains, with the plain we had just covered from Buffalo far…
Wed 23 Aug – Close encounter
We stayed overnight in a town called ‘Deadwood’, famous as the place where ‘Wild Bill’ Hickok was killed. Lots of people said we must see it – we were not greatly impressed. We travelled on to Devil’s Tower – probably most famous after the ‘Close Encounters’ film. You really can see it from miles away…
Tue 22 Aug – 3 States and Mount Rushmore
Today we drove east across Wyoming, taking in the north-west corner of Nebraska, and then north into South Dakota, towards Mount Rushmore. First thing to note is that the south-east corner of Wyoming and the north-west corner of Nebraska are rather empty. Having said that, there is a real sense of space and sheer size…
Mon 21 Aug – 2′ 22″ of darkness
The day started beautifully with a brilliant sunrise to match the previous evening’s sunset We wandered around the site while the eclipse developed, and some nearby people had a collection of telescopes, and our RV neighbours took a picture of the pair of us. Strangely, nobody we met had ever seen a total eclipse before,…
Sun 20 Aug – Jackalopes and Trains
We headed into Douglas early hoping to avoid walking in the heat that we had done yesterday afternoon. Douglas is the home of the Jackalope and there were plenty of signs of that in the town. and on the end of many of their park benches I really hope that they are not this big…
Sun 20 Aug – Awaiting eclipse and internet connection
JustĀ a temporary post to say we are in a field in Douglas, Wyoming with quite a few other campers awaiting the eclipse tomorrow. When we arrived there were actually Pronghorn grazing, but they have definitely decided they are better off out of here. We have more pictures of our travels, but insufficient internet connection…
Sat 19 Aug – Waiting in Douglas
In a field, because all the usual camp sites were already booked. Some had got bookings more than three years ago! The field was next to a drag racing strip – it was the only one in Wyoming, but closed at the end of 2015 We have new neighbours: Walking we disturbed a sole Pronghorn,…
Fri 18 Aug – Rest day & more shopping
We had a restful morning, even managed to do some yoga. We did then do another shopping trip to stock up, so that we can avoid doing so again until at least Tuesday when the madness should have abated. We even managed a quick dip in the campsite pool in the afternoon. Anyone would think…
Thur 17 Aug – Towards totality
We headed up from just South of Fort Collins The scenery for most of the drive up was dramatic, large area of grassland disappearing off in all directions But interspersed with impressive rock structures, some which also stretched off for miles. Most of the road stretched off straight ahead, but there were some impressive swooping…
Wed 16 Aug – RV time!
We got up, had breakfast, edited some ITV code, did a conference call with IBM and awaited the arrival of our RV. We thought it looked big, but it was when we got to the supermarket and it filled two spaces we got a real measure of what we were dealing with. These are American-sized…
