We headed into Douglas early hoping to avoid walking in the heat that we had done yesterday afternoon. Douglas is the home of the Jackalope and there were plenty of signs of that in the town.

and on the end of many of their park benches

I really hope that they are not this big

We chanced upon the Railway museum, where they had a 1962 steam engine, a couple of carriages from 1880s, and a sleeper and dining car from the 1950s.

The sleeper carriage was actually very impressive, with all mod cons in each room, including mains electricity, individually controlled heating and ventilation, full en-suite etc…

The ‘Silver Salver’ dining car was similarly impressive.

Inside the tables were elegantly set out, with proper china plates etc, and quite decent spacing between tables. Not crammed in like modern trains.

There was a matching all-metal kitchen in the dining car. Very well equipped, but it must have been very crowded and hot when in full flow serving lots of meals

Back at the RV we sat down with some neighbours and watched the sun set – a suitably brilliant sunset for the eve of the eclipse
